Its Only in K.U Recognized on the Daily Nation

"The widespread use of social media is changing the way students interact within campuses and across institutions of higher learning in the country. Kenyatta University students’ Facebook page It’s Only In KU, with more than 13,000 fans, has more followers than all the pages of the other universities combined.

Recent posts range from wishing final year students a nice time  while tarmacking, to opinions about the latest developments on campus.

“Many students know what is happening at Kenyatta University (KU) through the site,” the site’s administrator, who identified himself only as Gidi, said.

University students, who think they do not get enough attention in the mainstream media, are now using social media to disseminate unfiltered images and messages.

Also, although it is difficult to quantify the effect of social media on mobilisation, recent
events suggest its potential power in rallying students to a common cause. Daystar
University students last week went out to block Mombasa Road in an effort to call the authorities’ attention to a section that they blamed for the death of a colleague, who was killed in a road accident.

The sites are also a popular way of communication as students post updates about their adventures
off-campus. And even pages that appear to have been designed as platforms for academic purposes frequently have postings that lean towards the social. For instance, KU’s Friends of Econ was used to inform students of a bonfire and goat-eating ceremony for final year students.

However, the main concern among university officials appears to be that social media is taking up
massive amounts of students’ online time. As a result, some institutions, like Kenyatta University, have blocked access to the sites." By Nyambega Gisesa

THANK YOU ALL FOR THE SUPPORT
GOD BLESS.
